He was born to Liewald and Lydia (nee Eggemeyer) Eggemeyer on June 13, 1927 in Chester, Illinois.
Melbert married Lorna Rose Montroy on June 9, 1951, in Chester, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2014.
Melbert was a conductor for Union Pacific Railroad and a US Army Veteran.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Chester, Illinois, and the United Transportation Union, and a Life member of VFW Post #3553 in Chester.
