HARLOW “JAKE” HERMAN , 84, of Red Bud, Illinois, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, November 7, 2017 at Red Bud Regional Care Center surrounded by the family he loved – and who dearly loved him.

He was born to the late Jacob and Mary (nee Twiss) Herman on January 10, 1933 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

He married Carol Virginia Schaeffer on June 18, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They enjoyed 62 years together.

Upon High School graduation in 1951; he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. Following his service, he returned to Aberdeen where he attended Northern State College and earned his bachelor degree in business. After college, Harlow went on to enjoy a 40 year career in the health care field, starting as a Pharmaceutical Rep for Pfizer Drug Company, Personnel Director at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, CEO of Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND, CEO of St. Clement’s Hospital in Red Bud and finally he was CEO at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, Illinois. Harlow belonged to many professional organizations and was most proud of the year he served as President of the Illinois Catholic Health Association.

Harlow was of the Catholic Faith and belonged to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, where he served in the past on the parish council and finance committee. He was a lifetime member of the Elks. He proudly served on the school board during his time in Oakes.

Harlow loved to play golf and was a long time member of the North County Country Club. He was proud of the two holes-in-one, he achieved during his playing days. Harlow also loved to hunt, especially back in his home state of South Dakota; where the pheasant was king. He traveled back there many autumn’s over the years with family and friends to enjoy time in the fields.  He also enjoyed many hours on the seat of a snow machine while living in the Dakotas.
