Sr Mary Jerome Goeckner

SISTER MARY JEROME GOECKNER, ASC, 102 , of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, Ruma Center, Ruma, Illinois, passed away at 8:35 am, Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Ruma Center.

She was born to the late William and Rosa (nee Probst) Goeckner on December 3, 1912.   She made her first vows as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ on July 2, 1930 and perpetual profession on July 1, 1935. She had been professed for 85 years.

Sr. M. Jerome served in the medical field for over 60 years. She was the hospital administrator at St. Vincent (now Taylorville) Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL, St. Andrew, and later St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, IL and St. Clement (now Red Bud Regional) Hospital in Red Bud, IL.   After her training in nursing, she worked in Taylorville as both nurse and supervisor of nurses, as emergency room nurse and operating room supervisor, as telephone operator and medical transcriptionist. She assisted in the planning for the new hospital.   In Murphysboro, she undertook the challenge of building a new hospital, St. Joseph, to replace St. Andrew, the one formerly staffed by Franciscans.   When she was director of nurses at St. Clement, she developed job descriptions and wage scales for employees and was a key figure in creating plans for a new hospital.   Her nursing service also included being the Director of ASC senior sisters at Clementine Residence in Red Bud; then she returned to nursing for several years at St. Ann Home in Chester.   Sr. M. Jerome was a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators. She was also elected to the National Register of Prominent Americans by the Board of Trustees of that organization.   She began Living Mission in Later Life in 1995 and continued as one of the faithful quilters at the Ruma Center even after her 100th birthday.

Sr. M. Jerome is survived by Sr. Laura Goeckner, ASC and Sr. Emma Goeckner, ASC; one cousin – Sr. Jacinta Willenborg, ASC; many nieces, nephews and members of the U.S. Region of Adorers
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mothers – Clara Willenborg and Elizabeth Koester; step-sister – Virginia Koester, 3 Brothers – William, Alphonse and Norbert (Eleanor) Goeckner; and three members of the ASC community, Sr. Mary William, Sr. Martha and Sr. Adella Goeckner.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 am, Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Ruma Center Chapel, Ruma, Illinois
Officiating: Msgr. Daniel Jurek with reflection by a member of the ASC Leadership Team
Visitation: Saturday – 8:00 am – 11:00 am at the Ruma Center Chapel, Ruma, Illinois
Wake Service: Saturday at 10:00 am
Interment: Convent Cemetery in Ruma, Illinois
