MARTHA W. "MARTY" MAES, 94, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 4:38 pm, Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Three Springs Lodge Nursing Home, Chester, Illinois. Marty was born to the late Henry and Libbie (nee La Rose) Thomure on November 4, 1918 at Ste. Genevieve, MO. In 1928, her father was the victim of an unfortunate fatal accident at the Bluff City Quarry. Marty attended and graduated from Valle High School and was crowned Miss Missouri in the Bicentennial Celebration of 1935. After graduating from Valle High School, she worked at the Elder Shirt Factory until meeting Art Maes. She married Arthur "Art" Maes on November 14, 1938 at Ste. Genevieve, MO. Together they shared 67 years of marriage until his death on July 20, 2005. Marty and Art raised three children and operated various restaurant businesses, such as the New Moon, Night Hawk and the Bal Tabarin in Chester, Illinois. She helped her husband with his farm and also worked as a clerk at The Leader clothing store, Save-A-Lot, and The Food & Stuff convenience store. Marty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester, Blessed Virgin Mary Altar Sodality and the Chester Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She learned her favorite hobby, knitting, from Mary Cashman and enjoyed many years of retirement with her husband, Art.
