CORNELIUS J. “MAC” MCCARTY, 87, of Red Bud, Illinois, passed away at 10:10 pm, Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Evelyn’s House, St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born to the late Boyd and Viola (nee Walker) McCarty on March 24, 1933 in Marshall, Missouri.
C.J. married Mary Elmona Merlenbach on October 25, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, Illinois; she preceded in death on October 1, 2008.
He worked as a civil engineer for Sverdrup & Parcel in St. Louis, Missouri for 43 years. Through the course of his career; Mac worked on some iconic projects including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, Illinois and Holy Name Society. He had been a Trustee for the church and also chairman for the church picnic.
He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a kind and giving spirit with a smile that would light up a room.
He was an Army Veteran from the Korean War.

Due to the public health concerns because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a private funeral mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating. Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Red Bud, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions can be made in Mac’s memory to St. John the Baptist Catholic School or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and memorials are being accepted at the Pechacek Funeral Homes in Red Bud.
