James M. Howie

June 12, 1919 — August 1, 1943

TECHNICAL SGT. JAMES MILLS HOWIE, 24, of Chester Illinois, 345th Bombardment Squadron, 98 Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force, U.S Army Air Forces died August 1, 1943, in Operation Tidal Wave during the bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.


He was born to Minerva and M.S. Howie on June 12, 1919.


Details of the loss are documented in "Missing Air Crew Report #226" in the archival records of the 345th Bombardment Squadron. His remains were not identified. Ultimately, following the war, more than 80 unidentified remains from that raid were reinterred at the Ardennes and Liberator Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.


Remains were identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Laboratory in the Fall of 2022.
